L'Observatoire de la Montagne - Mountain guide

Outdoor activities ,  Rackets in Orlu
  • The Orlu Valley and its National Hunting and Wildlife Reserve have an exceptional natural heritage. The Mountain Observatory has the Maison de la Réserve label and offers nature hikes in summer and winter (snowshoeing) accompanied by specialists (reserve guide).

  • The Maison de la Réserve and the museum space will reopen in 2023.

Indeed, as part of the industrial tourism project called "Ingenious Valleys", these spaces are currently being redeveloped. It is a question of proposing a new hydroelectric and biodiversity interpretation space.

In the meantime, the Mountain Observatory team is still offering free tours of the hydroelectric power station as well as paid guided hikes. Book on 05 61 03 06 06

    ANIMATION MISSION – ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION
The Mountain Observatory, in partnership with the Adyu l'Ome association, is the benchmark for environmental education in Haute Ariège. With its 5 nature animators we offer nature activities for all audiences:individual, family, group, school, leisure centre... Discover the mountains in a fun or educational way with our nature walks to observe animals, our guided tours, our workshops specially designed for schoolchildren.
Discover the reserve with a specialist, during various themed outings (July/August):
    - "In the footsteps of marmots" A short nature walk for families with young children. First encounter with this emblematic animal.
    - "Observe the animals of the mountain": How beautiful are the chamois of the National Reserve of Orlu with their collars! But in this space of freedom, what are these nets for? Just enough time to surprise a marmot sprawled on a rock that the bearded vulture catches our eye with its majestic flight…a single watchword: Observation! Throughout the trail, eyes, telescopes and binoculars will relentlessly explore all the nooks and crannies of this living, wild and unspoilt mountain.
    - "Follow in the footsteps of a reserve specialist":Go with a professional from the Orlu National Wildlife Reserve in his field work: observations, telemetric monitoring, captures... A total immersion in the world of nature enthusiasts. Follow the guide and take part in the life of a reserve.
    - "Greedy summer pastures": They crunch the clover, savor the trefoil, sniff the gentian or ruminate patiently in a corner of the summer pasture... They have taste and know how to pass it on... A short walk to whet your appetite and understand the alchemy between the ancestral value of a herd of mountain cows and the content of your plate. Every Tuesday morning in July and August, we organize a walk on the summer pastures near the Col de Marmare with a nature guide from the Mountain Observatory to explain everything to you on the theme: "from the summer pasture to the plate" !

    SCIENTIFIC MISSION
The Mountain Observatory is the partner of the ONCFS (Office National de la Chasse et de la Faune Sauvage) for the scientific actions carried out on the Orlu Reserve:monitoring and studies on species such as izard, bearded vulture, capercaillie, rock ptarmigan, Pyrenean desman, etc.
Thus, our nature guides are also field agents fully invested in scientific research. The Observatory is also the organizer of the Natura 2000 sites of Quérigut-Orlu and Aston.
